Theory Test

You have to pass your theory test before you can even book your driving test.

But GOOD NEWS—I can and will do all I can to help you pass it. I have a collection of the LATEST PC DVDs which are available for loan and can provide sample question papers, advise you any aspect of the Highway Code you are unsure about and even bring my laptop computer to the lesson so you can try both the Multiple Choice and Hazard Perception parts of the Theory Test (see below).

There are also some products that I can recommend you buy e.g. The Highway Code book etc.

Preparing for the Theory Test
To prepare for both parts of the theory test I recommend that get plenty of practise first.  You need to pass both parts in one go i.e. if you fail Multiple choice but pass the Hazard Perception you will need to re-sit both parts again unfortunately. Both parts are computer based tests.

Part 1—Multiple choice
Part one now consists of 50 multiple choice questions (it was 35 until 3rd Sept 07) based on the Highway Code, driver attitude, vehicle safety, hazard awareness, first aid and the environmental issues of driving. You need to get a minimum of 43 out of 50 to pass this section.

Part 2—Hazard perception
Part two is a hazard perception test of 14 video clips filmed from the drivers point of view in which you will have to identify 15 developing hazards e.g. a pedestrian stepping from between parked cars. The earlier you identify the hazard (by clicking the computer mouse) the higher your score. You score a maximum of 5 points per clip (except on 1 clip which has 2 hazards so a maximum score of 10 points) and you need to score a minimum of 44 out of 75 to pass this section.

The best way to pass this section is to get plenty of practise (either on my laptop or your own PC) and that’s why I recommend using one of my DVDs. There are also websites where you can practise multiple choice and hazard perception. Most charge for this service but there are some free sites too (see my Useful Links section)
